Matt Humbard

Head Brewer, Chief Scientist, and co-founder of Patent Brewing Company

Matt Humbard has been brewing beer since his college days. He received his Bachelor's of Science in Microbiology from Arizona State University and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Cell biology from the University of Florida in 2009. After learning the ropes of brewing, Matt started delving deeper into the science of beer. In 2014, he started "A Ph.D. in Beer," a blog focused on the molecular biology and biochemistry of beer that covers topics from experimental hop varietals to the physiology of fermentative micro-organisms. In 2015, Matt co-founded Handsome Beer Company, a contract brewery based out of Maryland that offered a variety of Belgian-inspired ales. Handsome Beer Company ended operation after more than 2 years. In 2018, Matt co-founded the podcast "Milk the Funk - The Podcast," which focuses on the science of mixed fermentation of beer, wine, mead and cider.

Matt has been in the beer scene for many years and has become a valuable member of the beer community, always ready to share his knowledge and expertise — or just a beer! — with fellow brewers and those in the industry.

Krissi Humbard

Director of Experience and co-founder of Patent Brewing Company

Krissi Humbard started her love affair with beer long ago, when she used to sneak sips of her dad’s PBR or Stroh’s during family gatherings. Fast forward to legal drinking age, where she began to explore more styles, beginning with fruity wheat beers and amber ales, but quickly expanding to stouts, IPAs, as well as German and Belgian beers. A German-focused beer bar in Gainesville, Fla., brought she and her husband Matt together. The two spent many nights drinking through the extensive list of beer styles, all served in proper glassware.

“I love exploring beer styles and the traditions behind them. I’m constantly learning more about beer, and I find that really exciting. I’m looking forward to sharing some of my beer knowledge with the customers of Patent.”

Krissi has tasted thousands of craft beers over the years, from the rarest to the most common. She has traveled to some of the most influential breweries and beer locations in the world. She is constantly testing her palate, trying new beers and seeking out new breweries to visit.

Krissi lives in Hyattsville, Md., with her husband, two sons and dog. She has worked as a community journalist and social media manager for the last three years, with over 15 years experience in journalism. Krissi is also a community activist, planning art and music events around Hyattsville.
